We had a brillaint time at Berwick, I spent most of the time with the Fergie in the ploughing field.
Great pics John. Sorry I didn't get to see you but as I said earlier I was on the tractor most of the time!
Good turnout of exhibits this year I thought, nice to see some different engines there and good to see lots and lots of tractors!
Jim

P.S. I can see your pics clearly John

Had a great day with plenty to see. Good to see some new engines, especially the Hindley in steam. Does anyone have any information on the restoration project in the last picture?

Charlie D 21st September 2010 06:49 AM

so what is the ploughing engine 3rd picture up from the bottom then please?

haven't got any details on it, other than its a 2? inch scale single cylinder fowler, not sure what it's based on as the engine itself looks more modern than the cylinder design

00000 21st September 2010 02:51 PM

I think its a 'Church' patent circular slide valve, which dates from the 1880's. but the rest of it looks like a BB1 !
I think the bioiler is a Ransomes, & their patented firebox.

cocky_1987 21st September 2010 03:14 PM

i thought it looked a bit like a BB1 but it is a 'church' valve gear that was fitted on the cylinder

It looks a bit bigger than 2" scale. It could almost be mistaken for full size in the photo if all the water containers & other bits & pieces were not in view.

The firebox looks similar to a Garrett wrinkly top firebox. If it's to go in the boiler on the trailer it may be a Garrett compound of some sort similar to Vera.

Looking at the box the wrapper plate has been fabricated in 3 sections going by the weld half down the side. The top of the box is also flat front to back rather than being concave as per Garrett's design

Weren't there some early Fowler single cylinder ploughing engines built or re-built with a Church valve gear cylinder.

sorry about that, once i wrote it i realised it was wrong, it was bigger than 2", most probably 3" as the miniature hidden behind was a 4" agricultural

i did wonder if it was a garrett, purely because the cylinder block but wasn't really sure

Ransome 21570 21st September 2010 04:47 PM

I think I remember someone saying that it was a Garrett 4CD on the back of the pick up but I can't remember who owned it.

I'm pretty sure the miniature ploughing engine is a 4inch, possibly a 3inch.

Hope this helps
Jim

It just looked bigger than a 4CD. Must be something about these photos or my eyes playing tricks.

That sure is a strange looking firebox, esp. if it has a flat section on the crown! who made it/

Is it the one belonging to Mr Garnett of this parish? (does he still have one? - I remember being taken by Flagwasher to see it in Clevedon years ago)

sjf9393 22nd September 2010 04:21 PM

Stuart Woodbine of Chesterfield Derbyshire sadly no longer with us although his brother in law still continues the business I think.

GRUFFER 22nd September 2010 05:48 PM

Andy melrose has also got a proper former for a garrett crown we mad it to do ours:)

The governor 22nd September 2010 06:01 PM

Yes the garrett on the truck belong's to Mr Garnett boiler and box has been resting with us for a while at the yard, it's going up to shaftesbury steam to be rivited up.
Will be nice to see it up and going in the not to distant future.

Regards Rob

A shame what will be such a nice engine to have a realy rough fire box should have talked to woodbines they do some cracking work.

boilerspecter 28th September 2010 02:03 PM

if mr garnet is fitting the welded firebox and not the properly formed one, I am amazed, that firebox is tottally unacceptable . arwell it takes all sorts

Hmm,

I have ofter wondered about these fireboxes after I learnt of the 4CD sold at Kivells had its example removed.

When you ask the right questions to the right people, it seems there are a number about so fitted. That is square corner welded Garrett style fireboxes without the front to back crown.

Avelings fitted similar fireboxes to the late type rollers they produced, and quite a few of these have been reboxed similarly.

As a engineer who deals with section properties of structural steelwork, strikes me that the form as in Mr Garnett's firebox is a pretty stiff structure. After all the crown's role is to transfer the force on the projected plan area of the firebox onto its side plates. I suspect that if someone were to spend a bit of time doing the sums it should all stack up.

The Garrett 'crown' would help a little, but all that would mean is that you could probably use a thinner plate for the same job.

sjf9393 28th September 2010 03:16 PM

I am about to send a copy of the 4CD boiler drawings to a mr Robert Garnett at RSA for CE approvel. Is this the same chap as above?

boilerspecter 28th September 2010 06:37 PM

GARY, youve got it in one, there can only be one MR garnet

sjf9393 28th September 2010 06:45 PM

Cheers lew, As he has a Garrett hopefuly it wont be as painful as i think its going to be!

We had the presentation last night for this years charity Dorset Kidney Fund and another great amount raised, a cheque was presented for £20000. Thankyou to all those who supported and attended to make this event the success it is.

steamfan 22nd November 2010 09:10 PM

Thanks for the great photos, I sadly missed the show this year but in the past I have found it a very pleasant and friendly Rally - a real tonic after the hustle and bustle of the GDSF.
