A handful of pictures from the opening day before the clouds enveloped the show. Several engines listed had not arrived as of 1200.

It was a good event, however It has to be said that organisation (for the steamers at least) is the worst I've experienced in a number of years, and that is saying something. No defined engine line, not enough coal, difficult to come by water at times and the stewards had very little contact with most of the engine owners; we did get paid though. I thought the whole event had a very rough and untidy feel to it too.
Shame the road run has drawn co much police attention too.

Sorry if you did not have enough coal but we sent the amount we were paid to send.

I noticed that the Fowler K5 was getting through some big logs while parading the arena .
I enjoyed the day on the whole , plenty to see and not enough time to see it all .
For me the lack of a showman's line up was not an issue , photography I found to be easier .

It has to be said that the quality of the coal was definitely much better than it usually is! No complaints on that front. I saw them tipping it up loose on the Friday night, so all the pre-bagged stuff must have been distributed within the first two days. One of the blokes looking after our K5 has a wood yard, so we tend to get a load of logs in and put all the coal on the Sentinel. Unfortunately that coal is still on the back as we blew a tube out on the Saturday night road run and ended up on the low loader home. Most of the boiler fittings are now strewn about our shed and we should have it split for re-tubing by this time tomorrow!

Most sections at Pickering looked fantastically organised, it is just a shame the engines couldn't be set out neatly, there wasn't really enough space left for the general purpose engines. Our waggon spent two days parked in the middle of the caravans because health and safety said we couldn't obstruct the space round the ringside and there was nowhere else to park.

I found the coal to be pretty awful to be honest, their was no way we could generate on the engine as it would cover our fair rides in rubbish,

Lord Lassels tried to generate on the saturday for the chairoplanes but the smoke was that bad when just powering the cab lights, they had to stop to save everybodys lungs on the fair.

However it was still a good event and i thouroughly enjoyed it.

I cant understand this if yiou were burning my coal we dont sell coal which wont do the Job would have liked to send them the welsh but that was not an option Our coal we sent was the standard in the yellow bags not the loose coal.

Luke 9th August 2010 09:19 PM

The coal in yellow bags wasn't too bad but still very smokey and clinkerd very easily which made generating hardwork,

The loose coal that was deliverd on saturday was awful. Being careful with the amount of coal used at one point was key otherwise the smoke would fill the air

The coal we had from you was good stuff and wasnt too smokey interesting luke had clinker troubles we didnt, but the loose stuf was awfull for smoke. Did any one get any photos of the showmens on saturday night?

Ruston 10th August 2010 10:44 AM

Clinker with Andys coal not on the Ruston ,so is it the engine or the driver , all we get at the end of the day is fine ash , keep it coming Andy

Luke 10th August 2010 10:48 AM

speaking to quite a few of the showmans they all sed they had the same problem with clinker, so maybe the coal was ok for engines who are not working so hard :)

Dont know what the ampage was but we were powering the lights on the Oktoberfest organ which included 15 halogen floodlights, so we reckon there was a fair bit and had no problems.

ianmorris1960 11th August 2010 10:12 PM

Watching the meter on Friday night, Lord lascellles was peaking about 150 amps on the chairoplanes.

It was very noticable the amount of smoke on Saturday night around the fair.

I didn't get any of Andys coal, but had some left over from anglesey which I took - good stuff.

I did pick up the last few lumps of the loose coal on Saturday, it was more smokey than the house coal I took to light the Ruston! Seemed like the smoke was full of tar, tubes got very clogged.
