re pickering

we will be attending with our 1920s adult chairoplanes if it like cheshire steam last week it will be good as there was plenty to see and do at this new location everybody seemed to enjoy it and weather was great to

karlb84 14th July 2010 09:12 PM

lowsononline 15th July 2010 12:11 AM

Re Pickering

Am going down,
For pickering with caravan,
been going for years.

traction engine 15th July 2010 04:10 PM

I would love to come but it is on the same weekend as Kimble air field. I have decided that Kimble is the Best because you can drive the engines around all day on the run way.

cheers

Pickering Traction Engine Rally

We are going and looking forward to it. In what way has the lay out changed?

steamsec 20th July 2010 03:16 PM

Main change is that the public campsite has moved. Some slight tweaking in the front and middle fields whch should make things more visitor friendly.

Steamhead21 24th July 2010 12:26 PM

Public camping across main road from showfield entry via footbridge no disrespect to organisers but not very push/wheelchair friendly.
Disabled camping behind autojumble rows on edge of main showfield. so it will be better for main arena events. Anyone know if road run to Thorton le dale taking place this year usualy on friday evening.
Anyone driving their engines to pickering on road.
Reguards Peter.

So will it be a lot better than all the apparent hue and cry from last year..

Someone was at Flookburgh steam gathering last weekend dishing out trade space leaflets for Pickering, we are tempted to go, but surely a show that big and popular would have sold all the trade space months ago? So not having done Pickering before is it a good show?

Decisions...decisions..

Alex

Re Pickering

Well I have been attending Pickering for quite a few years now.
Always enjoyed it plenty to see and do it is so large that you cannot see everything in a day.
Never had any problems from organsers with camping.
reguards Peter.

Give them a call and book on,there will be trade space left. What happened last year didnt effect any trade. The weather forcast is good so should be a bust event.

In a word NO. Save your money and go to Lincoln a couple of weeks later. More engines, better facilities and better show all round.

steamsec 28th July 2010 10:52 PM

Mike, how will more engines and better facilities make it a better show for Alex? he is asking from a trade point of view. In your opinion Lincoln is better, you may be right but it doesnt stop 10s of 1000s going to Pickering ,which is what traders need.

Al the Steam 29th July 2010 08:03 AM

Thanks for the comments Guys, unfortunately my all singing Fiat Ducato has decided to develop gearbox problems yesterday, so if I can get it fixed in time all good and well, as it needs to be tip top for hauling our lovely toys and steam models there!

May well see you there.
Alex

Because the question he asked was, "IS it a good show"

steamsec 29th July 2010 06:38 PM

But Mike does your opinion that Lincoln is better make Pickering a bad show? Alex could do both as they are weeks apart, some good weather at both shows and he could buy a new van :).

David Littleboy 29th July 2010 06:41 PM

Have they over come the financial problems which led to the unfortunate problems last year when some poor woman was left to explain to engine owners why they would not be paid?

I hope so as apart from the modern funfair and the oversized market it always seemed like a good show

Fair point. I suppose I was looking at it more from an enthusiast point of view, as opposed to a stall holders.

woody2 30th July 2010 11:05 AM

its in the local paper today that 20 gypsies caravans have pulled onto land at york on the way to pickering.i guess that tells you what sort of show it is

Steamhead21 30th July 2010 01:49 PM

Re Pickering Gypies,
If you bothered to do your homework first.
You would see that their is over a mile of autojumble which has been at pickering all the years I have been attending.
So what if their are a few gypies their.
I have never heard of anyone complaining about them they pay to sell their goods their
the same as other traders.

I guess its a steam rally Woody, thats what it says on the tin :).The story I read today in the York Press quoted the travelers as saying some were going to Pickering some down south. I dont see the point you are trying to make, nearly every steam rally I have done in the last 10yrs has had travellers in or around it,

well its not the sort of show i want to take my children to;)Pickering on the Saturday used to great but if i want bother i will go into town not a steam fair

llrides 31st July 2010 09:12 AM

I will not be put off going to this event with my grandchildren there is good and bad among all comunities we are going with our caravan as we did last year but notice the new management state in the booking rules of the camping area NO VANS PICK-UP TRUCKS OR CARAVANS OVER 22FT if they inforce this rule it could cause problems with travellers who only have vans & pick ups this rule applies at Dorset Steam Fair every year and does work.
Any way lets hope for good weather and a good time for everyone
Trevor

steamsec 31st July 2010 05:20 PM

Just been on site today, all looking good. The bridge is much better this year and in a better location. The new campsite looks good, should be more space and less congestion now you dont have to go down the narrow Haygates Lane. The most important part of the infastructure is in place, the bars :). Just need some good weather and everyone will have a good 4 days.

Where have you been the last few years? I have heard numerous complaints over the last few eyars about gypises getting on site and causing havoc. Not neccesarily the ones selling, but they are certainyl about casuing mischief.

Ian Hardy 7th August 2010 10:18 AM

An observation from Pickering..

From an enthusiasts point of view probably the worst display especially remembering those of my childhood - when it was a traction engine rally. The showmans engine line has gone, instead they are scattered around with the modern and vintagae fairground rides and attractions mixed. The new arena is pointless, a fenced loop, nice.. Less entrants which given the goings on last year was of no surprise.

After visiting on thursday morning a return was put in place, with inlaws for the evening event last night, and can say the comments made above by woody and mikem were justified, the travelling youth certainly made their mark, kids as young as ten with pints of lager and gangs of teenagers drunk out of their heads make for a fantastic family evening out...

Will you be visiting Dorset?

Al the Steam 8th August 2010 02:05 PM

Well we couldn't get the Ducato back on road til Monday-ish (fingers crossed), so back to consulting the Old Glory whats on's, be nice to get some other verdicts in on Pickering, help decide if its worth trying to trade up there next year or leave well alone.

Pickering 2010

Have been camping at Pickering since Tuesday,
Disabled campsite long way from showfield, no lighting at night to find way back to caravan.
Totally agree with post about showmans line up they were all over the place much better in the " famous line up ". hardly any engines their this year 59 accourding to programme
excluding minitures.
Rather disapointing to be honist.
Enjoyed seeing lightning 2 back also Dr Busker and tractor pull.
Not sure if will go next year.

llrides 8th August 2010 05:35 PM

We too are just back from Pickering and where in the disabled caravan site a total disgrace to far away dark no security next to a field of gypsies who paid nothing and caused trouble event was spoilt we will not go back if we do we will go for one day and stay in a caravan site nearby

flyboy 8th August 2010 05:38 PM

I use a 4x4 pickup with a purpose built canopy over the back as my everyday vehicle, why should I be banned from the public campsites at Pickering and Dorset because of my choice of vehicle. Dorset actually state no vans or pickups with the exeption of Landrovers is that fair?

Ruston 8th August 2010 07:54 PM

So was the show good or bad or evil.?

No it isn't fair - just bitter experience.
