D2 Headstock

Headstock wanted for early Fowler D2 roller. Also an injector.

Craig , I fancy that all original Fowler D2 headstocks were the same . John Allen replacements were made stronger .You know that you can borrow mine as a pattern , and the drawing is available . Headstocks are in short supply , and usually damaged , so you might recover your costs on a pattern .

D2 Headstock

Agreed mine is the same and was replaced by Jacksons.

Craig,

I take it Dave did not manage to get the one that went with ''Queen of The Boyne''?

I am told that cast iron welding in Coalville can do miracles with the similar design Marshall cast headstocks, perhaps worth giving them a try?

Good idea Hedd , but because the headstock doubles as a very inadequate smokebox and chimney base they can get very thin . Not really one of Fowlers' best bits of design .

Thanks Bob for the offer of the loan, I just thought they may be one sat out there for sale before I go down other avenues. Hedd, Dave didnt get the one you have mentioned. He did tell me he new were it was but the guy wanted to sell the rolls with it, which I didnt realy want. I might give him a ring later and see what he can do. Thanks all.

It is a shame if Q of B's gear is sold off.

We sent it to MLB's as a complete package as I felt that all its convertable bits should stay with it as far as possible.

Craig,

There is one other D2 headstock I know of.

The D2 Roller Mike Sheardown has once had two.

The one currently (?) fitted is a replacement, a spare that came off a D2 once belonging to Clee Hill transport. Dick woolley had it as a spare and it went with the engine to Don Pritchard and then Ken Watkins, who finally fitted it to replace the original.

Its original, I am reliably told, had gone thin around the blast pipe. Now either Mike now has this one, or I hope it is still with Ken Watkins in Leintwardine.

Tony I would agree about QOTB keeping convertable gear, however the realist in me thinks that a cracked but usable headstock would be better on a pallet with QOTB and a good headstock fitted to Craig's Roller.

Thanks Hedd I will make some enquires.

Hedd, I have got the headstock off Ken yesterday. It has some damage around the bottom of the blast pipe, but is miles better than the one on 9005. We are going to try and weld it up. If it works I will be chuffed, If we make a balls up of it, then I am no worse off than I was last week. Besides losing a few quid.

The damage around the blastpipe was why it was taken off. I recall an external plate would have tidied it up no end.

Does it still have the C-C plates on it? if so PM me.

Cast Iron welding services did a lovely job with my headstock it was in two pieces they also built up the thin areas at the same time. It wasn't exactly cheap but im sure it was a lot less than getting a new one cast. I wouldn't be tempted to try welding it myself as it's is a specialist job and would end up costing more to put right afterwards than it would to get it done in the first place.
