57th World Ploughing Match,NZ
Been out there today with about 22 engines along with a Case engine (60hp)that has come to NZ a few mouths ago.Over 420 tractors and lots of ploughs.3 of your ploughs are there,5 furrow McLaren,2 furrow Keetley (Made in Kaiapoi NZ) and very old J.Barrowman. Garry

Hi Gary, It was an excellent show. The Case is a 50 although it did develop 60 bhp on the belt at 240rpm. John

And the smoke box was smoking towards the end of the test. Garry

Methven was fantastic, Only trouble is can't get out of the country. Supposed to fly out last Tuesday and at moment no sign of getting a flight.

If I knew how to post a link I would, but I don't, so if anyone's interested in searching for Millars Tractor Spares on Youtube, they'll find some good footage of John Winter on Buck, teaching a drag tractor a lesson
|
Earle, you beat me too it, and I dont know about links either. I copied this address down, maybe it helps www.youtube.com/watch?v=FLQhvruimfs. There is more than 1 video.
|
Thanks to Robert the Bruce for the photos, it was a great event with approx 1000 vintage exhibits. A dvd is being produced and I will post a few photos in due course. A novelty for us was the presence of Roger Mahon's Case.
|
Photo 10 is Foden 656 Built 1903.I had worked on this engine about 27 years ago on the tender and back wheels. This engine was on TT last year when it was for sale on Trademe. It was good to see it again and with rubber on the wheels.

This is just from memory, so don't quote these numbers! And I don't know them all so some are missed out.

Thanks all for those identifications.
FTR3456 has sent me the following images to add, firstly Clayton and Shuttleworth TE built in 1904 at the event: http://www.steamscenes.org.uk/tth/10...onship/025.jpg http://www.steamscenes.org.uk/tth/10...onship/029.jpg http://www.steamscenes.org.uk/tth/10...onship/030.jpg And these of Foden 656, the last one prior to restoration: http://www.steamscenes.org.uk/tth/10...onship/021.jpg http://www.steamscenes.org.uk/tth/10...onship/032.jpg |
Last Photo of Foden 656 in Dads yard in June 1980.It had tender repairs and a pair of better wheels put on her.To the right is Foster 3456

A few more photos, not just of engines as there were more than 1000 vintage exhibits entered. The Methven Vintage Club organised the vintage rally that was held in conjunction with the 57th World Ploughing Contest. As part of the display they asked for as many NZ ploughs as possible to be entered.
The largest plough entered was homemade by a Western Southland contractor, Graham Paterson in the 1960's. It was built to plough under flax, manuka and swampland. It weighs 6.3t. http://www.tractiontalkforum.com/pic...pictureid=1234 There was a good display of vintage ploughs, the most common were made by Reid & Gray. Its thought the first traction engine to come to NZ was a Gray and it was imported with a Gray plough. (for those who get Old Glory see page 26 of issue 241) http://www.tractiontalkforum.com/pic...pictureid=1233 The "Mowat" Fowler was put to good use on the Friday belt driving the spit roast. http://www.tractiontalkforum.com/pic...pictureid=1235 The Case engine put on a good display on the Hawkins Family sawbench. http://www.tractiontalkforum.com/pic...pictureid=1236 |
To the bottom left you can see my little girl (red top)sitting on my sholders

If you look throughall the photo's posted at Methven something soon becomes very obvious:
I think I spotted one young chap on a Fowler in a high viz jacket. No more Look at the parade ring, a rope anyone could crawl under. What protection around the woodcutting? How many accidents? NONE The reason why is because COMMON SENSE prevails. New Zealand make the most of it because in about 30 years you will have the same jobsworths in NZ that we currently have over here. |
