Dorset again

I did a bit of a write up on Dorset for the Foden Society Magazine and noticed a few images that were OK that I'd not posted on here before. I've fiddled with some of them for fun but anyway it's nice to look back to happier times and look forward to next year . . . .. .

David,

Some wonderful images, thanks for posting.

We get plenty of good pictures of machines on here but what you have provided is a great study of people.

Stef.

Oh No! not Dorset again!

It is about time that the local council redeveloped the site into housing for the elderly at least the land would be of some proper use then!

I'm pleased that you're not my representative on our local council regarding planning matters:(

Tom,

If you've got nothing useful to say then shut up.

davidje 21st January 2014 01:03 PM

I'm tempted to post a 'Dorset again, again' followed by 'Dorset again, again, again". I have plenty to choose from.

Alternatively, we could all chip in and pay for a Charisma Transplant for a certain individual. I understand the NHS waiting list is quite long . . . .

It's a new year and Bullshit Bowden has started again, definitely fuel for Scrunt & Farthing!

This really is the most ridiculous comment I have seen on TT - Presumably Ivybridge's local council would happily accept redevelopment of 600 acres of prime farmland near their town. You are very welcome to the vast number of houses we are getting here in Taunton. Seriously - this is classic attention seeking....

Yeah, well keep 'em coming David - there's plenty of us here with a genuine interest in steam traction who really enjoy your photographs.

Hello John, Happy New Year to you.

I knew that I would be stirring up a hornets nest with my comment and I was just waiting to see who was still awake during these dark dreary days of winter!

In all seriousness, I would hate to see farmland turned over to housing and as the Vice Chairman of our Planning Committee in Ivybridge I am very much against ANY greenfield development especially for wind turbines and especially those revolting solar farms which eat up prime agricultural land. We need to produce more food, I believe that in 2012, the last year for which figures have been produced that we as a country only produced 51% of the total amount of food which we consumed, this figure is nothing short of scandalous. Sadly, we are TOLD that we have to erect a certain number of new houses, not by the County Councils but by the Conservative Government who are currently in power. We have a new development called Sherford which is less than 10 miles away from Ivybridge which is a new settlement of 5,500 homes to be built on unspoilt farmland that due to objectors is running at least 15 years late and is only due to start because the government has thrown millions of pounds at the development to get it started and EACH house is paying £20,000 for in the way of a section 106 agreement (money which has to be paid by the developer to be used for new schools, education or other community use), which will raise around £111 million for new roads etc.

I know how the appearance of Taunton has changed over the years as when I was 6 we lived at Bathpool where my parents had the Post Office and General Stores. Where I use to walk with my mother on a Saturday afternoon to watch the trains is now a sports facility and new houses have been built on a farm which use to flood several times a year.

Seriously John, having read about how GDSF is organised, it always amazes me to think that roughly within a month the land goes from being farmland to the largest Steam fair in the world and then back again to farmland. That is quite some organisation.

I was very surprised that it was one of your images as I would normally expect this type of thing from Neil Armstrong as he is very good at photo manipulations!

600 acres of prime farmland would allow a developer to build in round figures 9,700 houses so you can see how much profit they would make on such a venture. Another problem with developers is that they rarely use local labour as they bring their own workforce with them.

With money being in short supply owing to the problems with our banking system, I often wonder who will buy all these "new houses" should they ever be built. This is a question which I raise on a regular basis and so far no one has given me a satisfactory answer. Nobody can even tell me a specific price range for affordable housing as this appears to vary from area to area.

Where do you go from here?

sparkright 22nd January 2014 06:59 PM

From here? Hopefully back to talking about traction engines

Tom, having spent 16 years as a councillor, much of it as chairman, dealing with a 5000 dwelling development I am well aware of how developers work and don't need be told. As has been said, let's get back to what Dorset is all about - I repeat, your original statement was ridiculous. The site is farm land and a major part of the contract with the owners is that it should be returned to the state in which it was found - by GDSF. Setting up, the show itself, pulling down and restoring the land all has to be done within 28 days. Housing and development has nothing to do with this thread. Stop hijacking it (again) to put you own political views....

I hope I am safe raising this, not really to do with engines, but it is to do with Dorset... lol

I just thought, The fields at Dorset are stubble for quite a lot of it, I wonder if the compaction of the ground causes the farm any issues? That said the use of the land and rent probably far outweighs the drop in productivity due to Ground Compaction.

No need to go min/no till on that farm. :-)

Cheers

Dave

Pride of Somerset 22nd January 2014 10:04 PM

Interesting thought that, Dave. I don't know the answer, but I have a meeting down at the GDSF office on Monday.......

ttp2011 23rd January 2014 12:42 AM

By the time of the summer when GDSF takes place, by the normal turn of events the ground should normally be quite hard after a long hot summer. In that respect I don't think that by having the engines on the land that it would cause a problem.

ttp2011 23rd January 2014 12:44 AM

A change of tack about GDSF.

What do people think will be in attendance this year? will it be a themed year again? what new engines should be at GDSF and which ones will be making their first appearances after a lengthly period of restoration?

Your not quite right on that one Tom, Engines leave marks in hard tarmac at times, and I some farmers take great care to keep the growing structure right. I do wonder being chalk if it is not as important, but it must have some effect.

I would be Interested to know the gen John.

Cheers

Dave

nicktrex 23rd January 2014 09:44 AM

I thought this forum was for 'Show Reports' and as such surely this would be simply photo's of events and discussions surrounding the photo's / the event.

Not stupid irrelevant comments posted for ones humour.

JR summed it up perfectly - attention seeking.

Back onto the subject of Dorset, fantastic photo's David as always, was a pleasure to finally meet you (I do apologize for being rather blunt at first, the book you showed me was very interesting.)

With regards Dave's comments, I think you hit the nail on the head there - 'That said the use of the land and rent probably far outweighs the drop in productivity due to Ground Compaction.' I have been told (from an unknown source) that even if the crops are not ready for harvest the farmer will still ensure the fields are ready in time.

00000 23rd January 2014 09:49 AM

Do you mean the playpen ,showmans area? I have thought that too , but isnt the ground ploughed up each year?

steaming my way 23rd January 2014 11:04 AM

Tom, GDSF are doing there bit to remember the 100 years of the outbreak of WW1 this year, so knowing the contacts they have it will be another sight to see! I had a good brain storm with one of the guys who is going to organise the WW1 section on Saturday!

I wonder if the Tank Museum at Bovington could be persuaded to send over their running WW1 tank(Foster of course) complete with drivers.

00000 23rd January 2014 06:57 PM

they could bring it with steam, like they did in 1993!!

bertie8ton 24th January 2014 10:41 AM

I'm not sure I'm very comfortable with a profit making organisation coming up with a 'sight to see'. I hope above all that it is respectful.

00000 24th January 2014 12:44 PM

'Corse it'll be respectful. I for one would love to see a running WW1 tank. They did it perfectly in 1993 from Bovingdon , & also from Swanage I think the next year. The engines were Len Cranes Fowler , Paul Scholeys Fowler, 'Boadicea' 'Clinker' & with Jim Sarneys Burrell from Swanage. But those Gents are all a bit older now, but i'm sure there's some younger ones to fill the gap!?

chief polisher 26th January 2014 01:36 AM

Paul would be up for it Jim I can assure you even being 70!

Regards

Matt

stefan mlynek 26th January 2014 12:22 PM

We were talking about this last night. Certainly the owners of those engines are a lot older; some no longer active with their engines or no longer associated with them.

But the engines are all still with us with enthusiastic crews.

I know that Martin Oliver will never miss an opportunity to promote the Show, and maybe the road train suggested by Jim could also be used to raise funds for the Royal British Legion or other Armed Forces charities.

Stef.

Any photo's of this Jim? Must have been a very impressive sight!

I'm sure Mr Searle could be persuaded...
