Iam looking for parts to help rebuild aveling and porter 10344 we believe it to be its an f type piston valve presently a tractor any boiler fittings or tender fittings and gear change mechanism available please get in touch if any one has the original engine plate of 10344 and wish to repatriate it to its rightful engine that would be fantastic if it's still in existance

Being an E.C.C engine (my area of interest ;) ) ... Royalty No.10344 (NO 5894) 10 ton F type was ordered new by Essex County Council in 1922 and spent most of its working life around Dunmow.
Will the engine be going back to roller form? |
Interesting - what's the story? It's not in the TER.

Just to add - not trying to hijack this thread! |
no hijacking at all as we ourselves know very little apart from the Blackgang Chine ownership
so the engine is nearly back on home turf being only 14 to 15 miles from buntingford now a days run once back in steam |
question of back to roller or not well its been a tractor now for over 36 yrs and some of that arguably commercially in the blackgang Saw Mill/Blackgang Chine and was in use commercially as a roller for only 28 yrs with ECC so its 50/50
|
It was never used commercially at the Blackgang chine sawmill other than being a glorified sign post.
The conversion was a basic one which to be honest looks pretty awful and would need to be re-done with new wheels, perch bracket etc to make it useable and anywhere near half decent looking. Fingers crossed the engine is returned to original condition as an F type roller. I have some working day pictures I will happily share if it helps the owner in his decision to restore back to a roller. Jim |
Working day photos are always welcome Jim

At least it's an engine saved from the scrap man and what ever form it comes out as it will be far better than it was and u cannot get away from its history and yrs as a tractor and I did say arguably commercially even be it an advertising banner it's spent more of its life as a tractor be it crude and awful exactly as my first engine was when I got that which also was an early scrap yard saved engine engines were change all the time from one form or another for commercial use during there working days tractors to showmans showmans to road locos it's all part and parcel of traction engine history this is an historic engine known to many as it is now so what's correct cause of action in a case such as this history is history

Back to business and parts available please get in touch

I will dig some pictures out for you in its true as built form. Jim |
When was this engine converted?
Any engine that survived beyond about 1970 didn't need 'saving from the scrap man'. If one prospective buyer didn't have it, the next may well have. Does it still have the hole in the hornplate & firebox for the electric motor? |
Wil have an even bigger hole in the boiler once we get the fire box out lol
|
Is it your roller Alan ??
Chris. |
my engine yes chris

A few of engines seemed to have swapped around during the war (My engine appears to have moved from Chelmsford depot to Newport during this period. My guess would be covering gaps for engines being used for war work.. airfields etc, hopefully will find some more evidence to support this in time. Also when an engine needed major boiler work it was typically summoned to the Chelmsford central works depot and a replacement engine sent out. NO5894 was sold off in 1954 with a few other rollers the council deemed 'non economical to repair’. |
Not sure if they are the same but would be worth following up on the slide valve Avelings being converted at the moment if the headstocks, rolls etc would fit your later machine. Be nice to see one of the ECC f types back in steam, with four of them surviving just about.

still looking for any parts if any are available or even kind loans of parts needed for casting and fabricating purposes
|
I think if you want help you really need to make it clear if you are going to keep it in tractor form or put it back as a roller.
If you go down the tractor route then there are no 'original bits' so it is difficult to know what you want. If I had some F type bits I would rather see them go on to a roller than a conversion so I would hold back. If you put it back as a F type then there are plenty of bits around and I for one would like to help you find them. Roger |
Any news on this restoration

Missed this thread the first time!
Your engine was ordered in the same batch as mine Alan (10345) on June 1st 1922. It left the works on 20th Sept that year & was equipped with sprayers, half canopy & water lifter. Most likely a living van too. No diff so it wouldn't make a very good tractor. Best of luck with it :) |
