What make & age is this portable and what's the story behind it?
[QUOTE=TractionTime;307869] [LEFT]A few more photos from me this time featuring the full size steam at South Cerney 2014. http://www.tractiontime.co.uk/module...d/DSC04323.jpg |
SC Night shots
Had a great weekend at SC, a little different to previous years perhaps & all seemed a bit quiter than usual on the Friday & Saturday day but more than made up for by Saturday evening & Sunday when the sun came out and everything came back to life. Commercial vehicles line up this year was fantastic, but the steam section was very goood too despite the issues with passes etc.
Mooched over to the (faintly terrifying) bar & adjacent (much more sane) beer tent Saturday night and the atmosphere was lovely- busy without being manic, and a nice selection of engines parked up and ticking over. No silliness, just people enjoying themselves- cracking stuff. My girlfriend took the opportunity to wave her camera around a bit, so thought I'd share a few of the results. http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y66...n.jpg~original http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y66...n.jpg~original http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y66...4.jpg~original Adrian Shipton was kind enough to invite us for a run around the steam arena on Fowler 15813, the first time I've been on road steam in a long time and something I very much enjoyed- thanks again Adrian! http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y66...n.jpg~original |

i was told the portable dates from around 1850 ish and is a cambridge ?

The portable is listed in the Traction Engine Register as Unknown Makers No 1 for those who would like to mark it 'as seen'.
It does belong to the Road Locomotive Society Chairman. This is only the second time it has been seen in public. It probably dates from 1840 - 1850 and must be the earliest portable in the UK. William Cambridge from Market Lavington, near Devizes; and later of Bristol, made similar return flue engines. However some features on this engines are significantly different. I am sure that any information would be gratefully received by the owner. It can be send to me to pass to him. Many thanks. |
A handful of my photos from South Cerney, I took far too many to post here! But you can find all the rest here: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?...6399505&type=3
