Is it the one belonging to Mr Garnett of this parish? (does he still have one? - I remember being taken by Flagwasher to see it in Clevedon years ago)

A shame what will be such a nice engine to have a realy rough fire box should have talked to woodbines they do some cracking work.

if mr garnet is fitting the welded firebox and not the properly formed one, I am amazed, that firebox is tottally unacceptable . arwell it takes all sorts

Hmm,

I have ofter wondered about these fireboxes after I learnt of the 4CD sold at Kivells had its example removed.

When you ask the right questions to the right people, it seems there are a number about so fitted. That is square corner welded Garrett style fireboxes without the front to back crown.

Avelings fitted similar fireboxes to the late type rollers they produced, and quite a few of these have been reboxed similarly.

As a engineer who deals with section properties of structural steelwork, strikes me that the form as in Mr Garnett's firebox is a pretty stiff structure. After all the crown's role is to transfer the force on the projected plan area of the firebox onto its side plates. I suspect that if someone were to spend a bit of time doing the sums it should all stack up.

The Garrett 'crown' would help a little, but all that would mean is that you could probably use a thinner plate for the same job.

I am about to send a copy of the 4CD boiler drawings to a mr Robert Garnett at RSA for CE approvel. Is this the same chap as above?
