This is the Engine of the above Albion fire engine, note the belt and braces ignition, a Distributor, a Magneto , 2 Plug per Cylinder but over on the other side is a single updraught Carburettor.

Double ignition on older fire engines is not that unusual. A friend had a couple of Dennis appliances of similar age and style and they also had two plugs, distributor and magneto. I seem to recall that only one system was normally used at any given time but would have thought that would have caused the other plug to soot up so may be mistaken.

They used to be looked after ny some of the local retained firemen who once had the embarrassment of calling out their colleagues when one of the engines blew back through the carburettor and caught fire.:o. Fortunately little damage was caused.

I have seen dual ignition before on a 1930s Bentley but that had 2 or 3 carburettors too.

I can't see any means of disengaging the Distributor but perhaps the Magneto can be.

I spent some time in the Beer tent listening to these guys, I thought they were quite good and a good repertoire.

You grumble about Rollers being converted, 2 whole Lawn mowers were scarified to make this.

I think there was a conversion theme at Rudgwick, I don't know why some people waste their time on items like this.
