Back to spooked horses, I spoke to a lady from a local riding club about my incident, She said that it's not uncommon, so in Her stables she hangs the odd plastic bag on the fences and similar to get the horses used to them.

The rider is the most vulnerable person , in that they could get thrown with possibly fatal or life changing injuries . We at least , in cars or on engines , are pretty safe . I had my car kicked by a horse many years ago , and the lady rider was very nice about it , saying that the 20 year old horse was reckoned to be bomb proof . With an engine if there is any doubt I park up and offer to lead the horse past , especially with children .

I shall tell the story again , of Michael Salmon , a vet who had ploughed with horses as a boy . He owned five engines . When on an engine he got an unladylike mouthful from the rider . He raised his cap , and said sweetly " Madam , we are both of us mounted upon anachronisms , but I am in control of mine "

Indeed. Seen below some years ago!

I seem to remember Neil restored it on his mum's drive.

I had such an unladylike mouthfull from such a woman. She clearly had not understood that I had seen her 100yards away and chose to wait at the bottom of the hill she was descending for her, and her partner to pass. (rather than ascending the hill with much noise). I was so surprised and upset by the course language and abuse I received that unfortunately just after she passed I neglected to prevent my engine blowing off steam (I was partaking in a nip of brandy to steady my nerves).

The horse showed her who was the boss and she had to jump off PDQ before being thrown much to the chargrin of myself and my steersman.

I enjoyed my visit last year, especially having a go at steering Southern Queen. Hopefully I'll be able to attend again in a few years' time
