Default "Tornado" Steam Loco Talk - Shropshire / Dec '09

Ok, I know it's railway related so of no interest to slightly over 110% of the forum membership, but even so, a work colleague is involved with organising/promoting it, and he has a rather painful electric cattle-prod beside his desk:

The Shropshire sections of the IMechE / IET combined winter programme have arranged for John Rawlinson from the "A1 Steam Locomotive Trust" to deliver a presentation reviewing the project and describing some of the technical challenges faced and overcome.

The presentation is to be held on Tuesday 1st December at 7:15pm at Shrewsbury College of Arts & Technology. - Open to all, free admission.

At the RLS AGM last weekend we were lucky enough to see Tornado at Kidderminster station - they arranged a break in the meeting especially to see it arrive!

Blimey, talk about a lowering of standards: The Road Locomotive Society holding their AGM at a steam railway - I'm suprised half the membership didn't boycott it in protest!
Whatever next? ...a lowering of their high membership eligibility requirements?!

More seriously, bearing in mind all the hype and fuss surrounding the thing, and the fact it's been running just 20 miles down the road for the last 2 weeks, I haven't seen it yet! Tch, perhaps I'm becoming too assimilated into road steam?!
Seems tomorrow it's leaving 'The Valley to work a mainline charter from Gloucester to London.
Oh well, too late now!

Default Tornado

Well, being lucky enough to live in Bridgnorth , I have had the pleasure of seeing ( and hearing ) Tornado all week .

What an absolutely stupendous bit of kit - almost in the same league as a Burrell !!.

And , what with the enlightenment of the RLS at last acknowledging that the are other forms of life on the planet , things are really looking good on the UK s premier heritage railway.

MARK .

I was a member of IEE / IET
...until membership shot up from about £30 to about £90!
The fact my employer will actually pay the membership fee for me is/was a technicality I was too lazy to get around to arranging!

BUT, I should stress that for the purposes of these talks/events (including the A1 Tornado talk) everyone is welcome to attend, membership of IMechE, IET or any other organisation (even NTET!) is not required. .

I suppose I too ought to try and get over to it - my flat's only a 7 minute walk from the college!
There's usually buffet type nibbles laid on for those prepared to turn up a bit earlier than the start time as well

They used to be called the "IEE" - "Institute of Electical Engineers" along the same vein as "IMechE" - "Institute of Mechanical Engineers".

A couple of years ago they decided a professional body with a universally known and respected title that instantly identified their area of interest was old-fashioned and needed changing. As a result they came up with "IET" - "Institute of Engineering and Technology" ...a meaningless naff name that I proudly didn't vote for! Lol.

I think the argument was that the IEE actually also incorporated a couple of other professional organisations that weren't strictly electrical/electronics orientated, so the change of name was/is supposed to more accurately represent the organisation. - Pah!
