How is the drive gear for the tar pump attached? When I used to see the sadly converted Undaunted I'd assumed it was on the end of the crankshaft but looking at the gear on your roller and the Meath roller beside it with the crankshaft not coming far beyond the flywheel I'm guessing I was wrong in that belief.

Hi Stuart, thanks for your interest and apologies for not getting back sooner but I've just arrived back from holiday. The tar pumps were driven by a cog attached to an extension on the end of the crank shaft. All of the tar sprayer rollers would have had this although most were probably removed along with the tar pumps when they became outdated. This is a close up of ours.
