Default Cumbria Steam Gathering - 28th - 29th July & Levens Hall engines

The Levens Hall engines WILL be at the Cumbria event this year, we have the crew available and the engines will be driven on the road to the event on the Thursday afternoon before the event so that Bertha can be part of the SAC driving day too.

Last Sunday we posed the engines in front of the Hall for photographs for the programme and they looked superb on the beautiful sunny day we had, even though the pictures are only from my phone.

I am really enjoying my time with the Levens Hall collection this year getting some regular engine time, particularly the tricky manouvers getting Bertha in and out of her shed. An interesting fact for me about Bertha is that she did haul a set of Steam Yachts in her working life so not only am I privilaged to be able to drive a set of Steam Yachts but I am also driving an engine that worked with a set

I hope you all like the photos, it is the first time I have managed to upload any since I joined the forum

Will be a nice run out from there. Apart from the A590 i guess! I only live in Ulverston and go passed Levens quite a bit, yet forget these engines live there.

I would like to think it might be a better rally this year. I travelled last year from East Anglia and stayed in the area either side of the weekend. Hardly any engines, how anyone could call a steam gathering, more a vehicle event. I sadly shall not be making the long journey to attend such a poor event. Sorry folks, just saying what I found. I just wanted to put this back to the top as the event is this weekend. One thing about this rally, there will be no issues with rain, lots of hard standing.

Also, everyone to there opinion but an event is not necesarily "poor" just because of the quantity of engines present. Not all events command a huge quantity of engines and the geographical location just means there a less engines locally. I do not know the engine numbers for this year but I would guess it would be around 15-20 full size engines and a similar number of miniatures - I stand to be corrected. There are a lot of other things besides steam including the usual vintage vehicles in good numbers, the Wall of Death as part of the fairground and lots of shopping for the other half. Also I understand there is going to be a big Model T Ford gathering on the Saturday as the owners clud stop-off during a big tour.

Additionally, there is also a Steam Apprentice driving day on the Friday so well done to the organisers, Tim Holt and Kevin Lawrence for putting this on too.

I hear Chris Harrison is roading his Fowler RL Western Star on Wednesday evening and as I write this the Levens engines are now going to be moving Thursday morning, with help from Chris.

Look forward to seeing some of you there.

Brian

Perhaps, this year I'll be able to get to this event.....

There aren't all that many events that I can get to attend, so I am looking forward to it, anyway.

Does anyone know what engines are going? Apart from the Levens Hall ones obviously.

Is Alex Sharphouse taking any of his?.

With the collection he has, I'm sure he could account for the a quarter of the 20 engines quoted. And he's only just up the road.

I'd like to have a look at that 15 ton Aveling of his.

No nothing this year. Its a lovely engine that, its in the shed next to mine and i always have to go and having a look around it when I'm there. Such an impressive size too. I dont think his 2 Fowlers have been to a show for quite some years now. In fact i dont think 1 has ever been out since he has had it - possibly even since it went into preservation?

I'd like to see it too, it's the closest of the 6 survivors in distance. The year I went to Flookburgh hoping to see it, Alex took one of the ploughers instead. Ah well, one day!
