Default Great North Steam Fair, Beamish Museum 17th April 2011

Had a great day in near perfect weather at Beamish Museum. Made several new friends and many long conversations
Ex-White Bros, Cardiff Burrell Scenic Winston Churchill


Durham registered RS&J Northern Star, a long time member of The Stafford Family





A McLaren that did not make it to last years McLaren Gathering at the GDSF. A repatriated example from New Zealand now resident in Lincolnshire and painted in a very dark blue

Towing a Marshall 8ton trailer


Also present though not photographed, I saw Roy Wakefield's Mann tractor "Brinkburn Lass", Borthwick's A&P roller Ayesha, Resident Fowler DNA roller "Rambler" and Thompson's Foden "Cestria". Most of them being driven round the whole site via the circular road and sometimes visiting the Colliery Village.
Other steam at the event included the following:-

Ex-LNER Class Y7 running the passenger service from Rowley Station


2 foot gauge Kerr Stuart "Wren" class Peter Pan


Head-Wrightson "Coffee Pot" seen in the colliery yard. The steam winding engine in the pit head was also in steam



Fletcher-Jennings "Captain Baxter"


While tucked away in the shed was long time preservation candidate "Malleable No.5"

we went up today for the first time and had a brilliant day out, we never made it to the pit village tho so it looks like we will have to go back

Burrell - Winston Churchill was new in 1922 to Albert Holland from Swadlincote, Derbyshire, the White Bros. plate on it was fitted new to there scenic but i cant remember the name of it,however the plate came from Barry Island Amusment Park when they had a clean out and gave it to the present owner Neil Corner who of course owns the ex. Whites organ.

This is one of the problems with preserved engines, especially if you are not familiar with them. You do not know what is original and what has been added later.
This is why TT is so good. There is always someone with the correct historical info

Aveling Porter No.11145 of 1925 climbs the hill out of the Colliery Village, then Marshall No. 17134 of 1889 descends the the hill slowly backwards. Then Mann tractor No. 1386 of 1919 passes on the museum main road. Then Standard Sentinel Wagon No. 1465 of 1940 approches the main entrance having come round the main road from the Town Centre

RS&J No. 24585 of 1911 climbs the cobbled road from the show field to the Town Centre past the passenger railway. Newly restored ex-New Zealnd Mclaren passes between the Town Centre and the main entrance then Marshall No. 17134 of 1889 demonstrates the stone crusher in the colliery yard. Finally resident Fowler DNA Roller arrives for water

You need to be either fit or lazy - no half measures. It is a big site and although the free bus & tram service is good, on busy days quite big queues form at the tram stops. Whenever I go, I walk everywhere and suffer the next day. We only live 10 miles from it but every time we go there have been changes. The horse drawn fish & chip van is due for opening in June. Hetton Prize Silver Band room has recently been removed to Beamish for re-erection. Dunrobin is on its way back from Canada and should be at Beamish after restoration. Every time I go there is more to see.
