The "balcony" is just to allow easy access to firewood that is stored at the front of the living van. The owner has plenty of trees for firewood so the engine is usually is steamed on wood which you need plenty of.

The living van in the first photo has the balcony at the back. It was built as a copy of the design of living van that was used in the working days with the Marshall. It was also built by the same builder, 1917 originally and new one in 1984.
