When mine got to that stage we drilled and tapped a 1/4 BSP hole into the cap and fitted a pipe plug, then silver soldered a cross piece to the plug so it could be undone with your fingers. Easy and the old cap needs never to come off again. (You can loctite it on so a little heat will get it off if you need to).
