WANTED Old school powered bandsaw or hacksaw
 

Hi all,
I'm after a power hacksaw, as the 2" steel bar by hand is starting to get tiresome. I'm after one of the cast iron ones you can hardly lift as aposed to the new pressed steel Clarke ones.
Closer to Exeter the better

There was a Wicksteed 6" hacksaw on eBay recently - located in Newport/Cwmbran. Last time I saw it it was £380 but the price had been reduced a few times. The other good thing is that the company selling it does not appear to normally sell this type of equipment so it might well accept a much lower offer.

Item 252738145183. It's back up at £480 but it has been less. It's also in Pontypool.

Make them an offer as I suspect they will be glad to see it go - it's been for sale for many weeks probably because they are asking way to much.

I have the same saw and it is a solid lump!

Thanks for the tip off, I think I may have spotted that earlier but excluded it as the price is a bit high, that said after hearing that I'll send them over an offer.
How do you find the saw, capable enough?

The saw is brilliant. If you set up the blade properly it cuts square and provided the hydraulic lifter works then the blade lasts for ages. It is a proper commercial machine and will work all day long.
If you do buy it I have a user/parts manual which I can copy.
I have cut 5.75" round with it - not quickly, but it managed with ease.

Perfect, that sounds like just the machine! The one issue I can see with it though is that it is three phase, I presume the hydraulic lifter is powered from the motor rather than some fancy electronics?

The hydraulic lifter/cutting speed controller is mechanical and driven off of a cam mounted on the crankshaft.

Changing the motor would be easy. However you might want to start thinking about investing in a 5hp static phase converter as you might find other 3 phase machines come up and you won't have to swap out the motor and the DOL starters. Older machines with original copper-rich motors run very well on static converters because they tolerate the phase imbalance far better than most modern motors which have the absolute minimum of copper.

Oh ok, it's not too bad to swap the motors of then.
In a way I wish I'd gone down the transwave route as advised for the lathe as in the long term it would have been advantageous however I was trying to get it running without spending too much money.
Also I didn't imagine myself needing anymore tools and so it would just be the lathe needing converting.
If I were to be lucky with the hacksaw I will probably look at going down the transwave route again but we will have to see.

I saw earlier today that the hacksaw on ebay was listed at just under £3000!! I suspect they have sold it privately and don't want to pay commission.. Inflating the price to put off bidders is a common way that some sellers get around the rules without drawing attention from ebay by stopping an auction early.

I think no I have sorted myself a hack saw possibly.
Just had a look too, looks very much like that was the case, escapes the eBay fees and this is very colmmin now it
