National Ploughing Championships 2017

Not a steam event, but the Steam Plough Club were asked to field a couple of sets of steam tackle down in Somerset this weekend for this years National Ploughing Championships. The net result was 5 engines and two implements and a thoroughly enjoyable weekend. Big thank you to Dick Eastwood, Alan Sparkes, Julie Chick and Mike Beebey who orchestrated the steam demo. Apologies to Brian, I didn't seem to get a picture of Princess Mary in all the excitement.

There was a bit of a reunion for two of the engines which had not been together since they lay derelict at Binton in the old railway yard when in the ownership of Bomford and Carr. They were in fact a B & C pair and were used together on a number of jobs including Grimwith Resevoir and Gledhow Park in their birth town, Fowlers 15222 and 15529

Some other shots of the frivolities including the start of the construction of a Neolithic stone ring by the Sparkes team - it did make the plough leap in the air a bit!

And finally, Lizzie giving it the "I can see something you can't" ploughing engine driver stance.

No no, it was a substantial lump of Somerset rooted out of the ground.

It would have been a bugger if it got jammed up in the plough! Looks like a good weekend.

It did take them a minute or two to get it out Jim, the other thing I forgot to mention was that we were in quite close proximity to the WSR. On Saturday morning whilst getting the engine oiled up, we heard the first train of the day whistle up and pull away from Bishop's Lydeard. You could then hear her blasting her way up the bank to Crowcombe. Then, on the way home with the Landy and caravan we had a race with a Midland 060 heading back to BL

Yes you can hear them nearly all the way on a good day. Lovely country up there.

Thanks for the pictures Steve! Was a brilliant weekend. Pleased to see 15222 and 15229 ploughing together. That stone certainly threw the plough out a fair bit!
