Edendale Crank Up 2015
 

The annual Edendale Crank Up featured "Celebrating Steam in Southland" this year. The event was attended by 20 traction engines, 3 steam wagons, 1 portable and 2 models.
Southland was the first province to use steam for ploughing, using an engine and plough supplied by John Gray, Scotland. Two Gray boilers survive. I have included a photo from an earlier Crank Up to showing the remains of one of these boilers. The boiler is kept at the Southland Steam Engine Club property, Brydone.
The rally was also attended for the first time by 6 Hp McLaren 221, built in 1883, plus 3 steam wagons which was rather special considering the few we have.
Activities included driving a tin mill, chaffcutter, stone crusher and prony brake.

I didn't know that Burrell tractor 'May Queen' was down in New Zealand. Is it just visiting?

Yes, just visiting. The Hawkins family were good enough to bring it south for the weekend.

So gorgeous I mentioned it twice, sorry...

The mclaren still has the torque arm on the wheels and the original hubs from when it had the tear drop shaped springs in
the wheels.

The 7 Hp Garrett engine is no. 28752 built 1910. It is a 2 speed unsprung engine and was used for driving a wooden mill when first purchased.
The 8 Hp SCC Burrell is no.3625, 3 speed, unsprung. Again it was used for driving a Marshall wooden mill in its early working days.
The Garrett wagon is no.34033 made in 1921. It has ben the subject of another thread on here.
