Wanted so we can Convert a Roller

As some will know I look after the Vehicles at the Shuttleworth Collection at Old Warden. We have made a decision to actively now pursue the component parts to allow us to RE- convert our Clayton & Shuttleworth Traction Engine, 'Dorothy' back to her pre-preservation state as a 10 Ton Roller.

We have so far drawn a blank on trying to locate the original front rolls, which we understand were taken to be put to use as a cricket pitch roll. So we are looking to acquire a suitable set of front rolls and forks that would look more or less correct as a substitute. Aveling / Fowler would be acceptable. We will be casting a new C & S headstock.

Any leads would be grateful.

Duchy College in Stoke Climsland in Cornwall had a trailed roller made up of front rolls, Mr Wakeham might know who to contact.

What are approximate sizes Stuart?

Diameter for similar engines?

Width between inside edges of rear wheels? (so the width of the front ones can be estimated).

I know of a good many sets of front rolls, which I can visit to gauge suitability with a tape. I don't buy them as they are essentially unsaleable in normal circumstances.

I assume Mr Haxby in Lincolnshire converted it before Garth Holman bought it?

It is nice to see this happening.

No, I’ve seen a photo of it in Cornwall on wheels before Ray Haxby bought it in 1978. Incidentally, commercially he owned a very late Marshall 8NHP compound TE, 87512(1934).

Then this might be the engine which I saw by the road in Fraddon in the '70's .

Hi Stuart

I know of a set of forks and rolls. If you give indication of sizes I’ll ask.

That would have been George James Marshall conversion called ‘Fraddon’ Bob. If you travelled down further on the A30 just short of Chiverton you would have seen Solways Garage on your right, that’s where the Clayton was.
