Andrew Semple of the NTET has patterns of pretty much every size, so if you end up needing some case, he'd be the person to speak to

What length?

Proff 10th November 2017 07:43 PM

The clue is in 810mm Bob

Ah , mm's did not register . Too long for me to help I am afraid .

If you can't find any that match maybe give fabricated steel firebars some thought? Might save some pennies plus I hear good reports on them.

Bridport Foundry would probably be able to cast you some.

They’ve done a lot of casting for me including firebars but I haven’t even down there for 18 months. I heard a rumour that Steve Lambert has since moved on. Can anyone confirm that??

I had a set fabricated for my Aveling BS at Statfold Engineering works and very pleased with them.

Was it boiler plate they used or something similar?

I just used S275. I'll tell you at the weekend what there like when I drop the grate Saturday. I put them in before we moved onto Ashby Magna in June. They've done about 150 - 170 Miles on the road with us this year as well as 5 weekends sawing.

Had great success with inverted angle in both our Ransomes and rollers

Hi can't remember what grade of steel but they are proper job with ribs welded on etc and after a year are like new. Give Nick Noon at statfold a call if you are interested.

I also need some , 28 " in length, need 3 at the moment . Preferably in Cornwall for ease of picking up but anywhere considered.

We have had a set of steel bars in our Wallis Advance for something in the region of 15 years. Ordinary stock steel from our local stockist, 100mm X 10mm, notched at each end and a 10 MM. tab welded on each end. She does some pretty serious mountaineering in North Wales doing her level best to impersonate a blast furnace and they have stood up really well.

i'll try that.

I have steel bars in my roller for the last 6 years, and so far haven't had any problems, apart from every 2 years I have to straighten them in the press.

On the rare occasion that it happens ,we find a sledge hammer and a concrete driveway suffice ;)

We have been using steel fire bars\ grates in sentinel " vectis knight " for several years
Same grade as used to make log burner baskets
Last about 4 to 5 years and they do get BL....dy hot in sentinel boilers
Last set I made last winter
New steel unit with original cast unit as pattern

Under construction

Works out one third cost of new cast set

What sort of thickness & depth are those with larger engines running with?
I was thinking along the lines of 15-20mm thick & 6" deep for my f type? Thats just a guess imagine they want to be fairly deep to aid cooling.

I replicated the cast bars in steel - so I think they are 20mm thick with 3mm tabs welded to them. I know some who have gone thinner so that the bars themselves are lighter when trying to remove and re-fit but have increased to number of bars in the grate.

00000 17th November 2017 01:35 PM

Just bought some steel 10mm x 100 mm deep enough to make four bars initially, no need for more at present as the other cast ones are good. Will cut to shape & weld spacers on in the next few weeks.
