Somerset Steam and Country Show

Show Preview

2017 looks to be an exciting year. The show will have its usual mix of over 700 exhibits including over 40 full size steam engines, some of which will be giving free trailer rides.
After last year’s launch of the children’s area, 2017 will be even bigger and better. This year it will include hands-on steam engines and tractors, bouncy castle, try your hand at stone carving, meet the animals, sandpit, pedal tractors and the most critical part, the parent seating! This is all free and there is no charge for U16 show entry.
2017 is a Steam Ploughing special. Steam Ploughing is normally carried out with a pair of engines with large winching drums, with an engine at each end of the field, known as a set. 2017 will see 3 full sets of ploughing engines. 2017 will be the first time the show has had a direct ploughing demonstration - where a direct ploughing engine tows the plough in a similar way to a modern tractor - a practice that is a very rare site in the UK. Direct ploughing will be carried out by two Fowler direct ploughing engines no. 9691 and 12063. These engines both spent their working lives direct ploughing in Australia.
We are also very pleased to announce Mike White will be bringing along Clayton & Shuttleworth Engine no. 46176. This engine spent its life in Australia and has only been back in the UK for 3 months. The club is very excited to have this rare engine at the show.

Indeed. We shall be leaving home around midday and heading out through Shapwick, Top of Ashcott, Pedwell hill, out over the moor to High Ham hill, blow the firebars out the chimney then on to the rally field with what steam is left.

We had a nice run over and are now parked up on the field with an Aveling roller and a Sentinel.

On the way home we happened upon this old girl rumbling through the back lanes nearing the rally field
