Yes, it is, Edd, and the fiftieth anniversary of the Somerset Traction Engine Club, which began in 1959 when the members of the 'Taunton Traction Engine Rally Committee' renamed themselves as the Somerset Traction Engine Club..... And no, I wasn't on that committee, though I think I may have done 25 years this year!

I see my roller is on your New Year run and my Fastrac that pulls it. The picture makes the fastrac look so big against the other tractors!!!
See you there.
Mike

Glad you like the pics Mike. There were so many entries for the New Years Day road-run it was hard to be selective for the website!

Pride of Somerset 10th July 2009 08:18 AM

Yes indeed - and as posted elsewhere, on Thursday the coal for the rally will be taken over from Jerry Darch's premises in Yeovil to the rally site by Sentinel 3899 and Foden 13752 on Thursday July 16th.

45 full size engines on the books - including, for the first time for many year's the Club Vice President's Burrell Perseverance the Second. First timers are Les Searle's Burrell Crane engine His Majesty (so with Old Tim, two cranes), Chris Griffith's Clayton, The Gaffer, Vince Hawkins's Wallis Fair Rosamund, Chris Smith's Marshall Roller Toby, Mike White's ex-Switzerland Aveling roller 5995, Richard Newman's Aveling roller 5623 (newly restored) etc etc. Returning are Sarah Marsh's Gold Medal Harry, Tony Beeching's Marshall Countess (restoration almost complete), Andy Williams's Garrett The Chough, Four Fowler ploughing engines in action.

Good road run on Friday - two routes around the levels.

Come and visit the best and longest established rally in Somerset bar none- 54 years and still going strong!

Note that the council in their infinite wisdom have closed the A372 road from Othery to Langport....

Eddie_Skidd 10th July 2009 05:16 PM

Cant make it which is a shame, but then there is always next year and the steam party in October.

Edd.

roger1970 10th July 2009 05:40 PM

I have it on good authority that a surprise Burrell Scenic will be at Langport.

Eddie_Skidd 10th July 2009 09:09 PM

Road Loco 11th July 2009 11:51 AM

roger1970 11th July 2009 12:48 PM

No it's not Ex-mayor

Eddie_Skidd 12th July 2009 04:12 PM

Ive just been speeking to Richard Philips the steam steward for Langport, he informs me that there will be 3 Burrell Scenic engines at the rally and over 50 full size steam engines booked to attend. 30 engines will be taking part in fridays road run and that all other sections have a bumper entry. Looks like its going to be a good one!

Road Loco 12th July 2009 04:38 PM

Thanks Steve - it would be good to see The Maid with us again....

Regarding Scenics, I know we have Perseverance and Earl Beatty - though it could be Quo Vadis. Not heard of the third yet - a late entry, presumably, as it was not on my list for the programme last week. I shall be out at the site tonight so may know more later....

Eddie_Skidd 13th July 2009 04:42 PM

3 for sure John!

MG 13th July 2009 04:47 PM

shame won't be able to make it this year, but my money would be General Gough being there

Pride of Somerset 13th July 2009 06:59 PM

Just back from the site.... Definitely three - and the third really is a surprise - I could say "Wait and See" - but no, that's not a Scenic......

Andy myers 13th July 2009 09:09 PM

Young Buster 13th July 2009 09:52 PM

I hope its Quo, I was lucky enogh to be able to generate for a couple hours on it when it last attended Langport. I still dont know the crews name now! I was just stood there asking questions, and one thing lead to another. Makes you feel very honered to be able to even stand on such a machine, let alone be left with it at full chat! Loved every min!

I bet the crew werent far away, but it was a night to remember for me :D

Sorry, Mike - missed the Tasker off my 'first timers' list. However, I've just looked through my database of engines that have attended in the fifty years that the Somerset Club events have been going on, and see that I have it listed as having been before - but no date given. If I have time, (unlikely this week!!) I'll look through my programmes.
