It was mentioned to me the Wallis and Stevens (07/21) was a "Barn find" though they did not elaborate ,any one care to post the details?

carl_byrne 18th June 2017 11:34 PM

It's good to see Vera - first time for me in 20 years.

Cheers Carl.

This is my local event, and annoyingly due to bad planning by she who must be obeyed. I missed it again this year. I too would be interested in any info on the Wallis.

Vera really is a fine looking machine.
What's the theory behind plumbing the drain cocks into the smoke box?

weidner 19th June 2017 10:32 AM

Doesn't scare the horses . This was a very real issue when most traffic was horse drawn . A spooked horse is a dangerous thing .

Even when you're driving a car.A few years back I was passing a horse, I was well over the right hand side of the road, when suddenly the horse literally jumped sideways, smacking the riders leg against the roof/top of door of my Jag, turned out that it had been spooked by, of all things, a plastic bag in the hedgerow luckily, the girl wasn't hurt, but it left us both in an 'uncomfortable' position for a while.

Stephen

I come across horses quite regular with the engine. There seems to be two types of horses. Ones that are well tempered and care not about anything greatly (even me and the steamer), and those that are frightened by a bee farting. Sadly it is the 2nd type that are the most common.

With more and more incidents with all type of traffic and horses, it is time that the horsey community understand that they need to train horses properly. Doing a half arsed job of it puts the riders and the general public at risk.

I couldn't agree more Mr Brass Cleaner. I personally think that if a horse is to be taken on the queens highway they out to have some form of Identification number branded onto them so that if an incident occurs the animal is instantly recognisable like a car. Also it means that if an incident occurs that there is no issue with owner identification and insurance policies.

The practice of horse riders round our way is to ride up the road 2 abreast even o0n roads with blind/tight corners. the riders on the outside then expect you to mount the verge or footpath to get by them. This really gets me mad!

The Wallis was more of a garden find than a barn. She was owned by Val Dunnett for many years and is no 7628

There's a good thread on here somewhere with a bit more information on her.

Back to spooked horses, I spoke to a lady from a local riding club about my incident, She said that it's not uncommon, so in Her stables she hangs the odd plastic bag on the fences and similar to get the horses used to them.

Nice to see Wallis Advance 7979 back out, she is looking well.

weidner 19th June 2017 02:10 PM

The rider is the most vulnerable person , in that they could get thrown with possibly fatal or life changing injuries . We at least , in cars or on engines , are pretty safe . I had my car kicked by a horse many years ago , and the lady rider was very nice about it , saying that the 20 year old horse was reckoned to be bomb proof . With an engine if there is any doubt I park up and offer to lead the horse past , especially with children .

I shall tell the story again , of Michael Salmon , a vet who had ploughed with horses as a boy . He owned five engines . When on an engine he got an unladylike mouthful from the rider . He raised his cap , and said sweetly " Madam , we are both of us mounted upon anachronisms , but I am in control of mine "

Indeed. Seen below some years ago!

I seem to remember Neil restored it on his mum's drive.

I had such an unladylike mouthfull from such a woman. She clearly had not understood that I had seen her 100yards away and chose to wait at the bottom of the hill she was descending for her, and her partner to pass. (rather than ascending the hill with much noise). I was so surprised and upset by the course language and abuse I received that unfortunately just after she passed I neglected to prevent my engine blowing off steam (I was partaking in a nip of brandy to steady my nerves).

The horse showed her who was the boss and she had to jump off PDQ before being thrown much to the chargrin of myself and my steersman.

I enjoyed my visit last year, especially having a go at steering Southern Queen. Hopefully I'll be able to attend again in a few years' time
